Timbavati is the other great private reserve of the Greater Kruger, and the quieter, wilder alternative to its famous neighbour Sabi Sand. It covers 53,000 hectares on the western side of the park, part of a 400,000-hectare ecosystem, and like Sabi Sand it shares an open, fenceless border with Kruger, so the same wildlife moves freely across the whole system. What you get here is the same guided safari, off-road drives, night drives and walking safaris in open vehicles, with a different character: fewer lodges, fewer vehicles, and more often a sighting that’s yours alone.
Its claim to fame is the white lions. Timbavati is the historic home of these rare, pale cats, a natural genetic colouring that appears here more than anywhere else in the wild, and they’re woven into the reserve’s identity. It’s worth being realistic, though, because white lions are genuinely uncommon and most visitors will never see one. The right way to come is for the quality of the safari and the sense of wilderness, with a white lion as the lottery ticket rather than the booking reason. The Big Five are all present, the guiding is excellent, and the low vehicle density makes every sighting feel earned.
