Overview
The Garden Route is the drive most first-timers build a South Africa trip around, and for good reason. It runs about 300 km along the southern coast, from Mossel Bay in the west to Storms River in the east, linking lagoon towns, indigenous forest and a run of quiet beaches by one easy road, the N2.
You don’t rush it. Knysna sits on a tidal lagoon known for its oysters; Wilderness has lakes and forest trails; Plettenberg Bay has the best beaches and the marine life. At the eastern end, Tsitsikamma packs the suspension bridge, the world’s highest bridge bungee and the start of the Otter Trail into a few green kilometres.
Two detours earn the turn-off. Inland over the Outeniqua mountains, Oudtshoorn brings the Cango Caves and the ostrich farms of the Little Karoo. Carry on east past Storms River and Addo Elephant Park adds a Big Five finish near Port Elizabeth. Most people drive west to east and fly home from George or PE.

Plettenberg Bay
The route's best beaches, and its best marine life. Walk the Robberg peninsula, swim with seals, or watch for whales and dolphins offshore between June and November.

Wilderness & the lakes
A string of lakes, rivers and forest just east of George. Paddle the Touw River, walk to a waterfall, or take in the coast from the Map of Africa viewpoint. The route's quietest, greenest stretch.

Oudtshoorn & the Cango Caves
An hour inland over the Outeniqua mountains, into the dry Little Karoo. Ostrich farms, the limestone chambers of the Cango Caves, and the Swartberg Pass for anyone who likes a mountain road.

Addo Elephant Park
Past the eastern end of the route, near Port Elizabeth, a malaria-free Big Five park. The natural finale if you're driving on rather than turning back.

Knysna lagoon oyster cruise
Cruise the lagoon to the Heads with local oysters and a glass of white wine. The classic Knysna afternoon, on the water.

The neighbourhoods
Mossel Bay & George
The western gateway and the route's only airport (GRJ). Mossel Bay has the beaches and the start of the drive; George is the practical base inland.
Knysna & Wilderness
The green heart of the route. Lagoon, forest and lakes within half an hour of each other. The best place to slow down for two or three nights.
Plettenberg Bay & Tsitsikamma
The eastern end: the best beaches, the marine life, and the forest-and-adventure cluster around Storms River. A natural last stop before turning inland or driving on.

Good to know
Getting there
Fly into George (GRJ), mid-route, from Cape Town or Johannesburg. Many drive the whole route from Cape Town (Mossel Bay is about 4 h) and fly home from Port Elizabeth (PLZ) at the eastern end.
Getting around
A rental car is essential: the Garden Route is a drive. The N2 links every stop, and the roughly 300 km from Mossel Bay to Storms River takes a day without stops, but you'll want several.
Power & eSIM
Type M plugs, 230 V. Coverage is good in the towns. A local eSIM (Vodacom, MTN) keeps you online between stops.
When to go
Spring (Sep–Nov) and autumn (Mar–May) are mild and quiet. Summer (Dec–Feb) is warm and busy. Whales pass June to November, peaking in September.
Safety
Among the safest parts of South Africa. Take the usual care in towns at night, and don't leave valuables in a parked car at trailheads and viewpoints.
Money & budget
The rand (ZAR). Cards work everywhere. The route is affordable: splurge on a lodge or two and keep the rest casual. A 10% tip is customary.
