Ask a Kruger guide where the game is best and the answer, more often than not, is Lower Sabie. The camp sits on the Sabie River downstream of Skukuza, in open, water-rich country, and the loops that radiate from it are widely rated as the richest game viewing in the whole park. It’s smaller and more relaxed than the main camp, and its setting is one of the best anywhere in Kruger, with the river running right below the fence.
The headline is the wildlife you can watch without even driving. Sunset Dam, a stone’s throw from the gate, works like a grandstand over a waterhole: park, switch off, and wait as hippo, crocodile, elephant and antelope come and go through the changing light. Inside the camp, the restaurant deck looks straight onto the Sabie, so a coffee comes with hippos below and game on the far bank. When you do drive, the H4-1 along the river toward Skukuza, the H4-2 down to the Crocodile, and the quiet gravel S28 are predator country, holding lion, cheetah and the densest general game in Kruger.
Use it the way the guides do. Request a riverfront unit and book early, because this camp fills fast. Sit at Sunset Dam at dawn and dusk rather than rushing past it. Drive the river road between Lower Sabie and Skukuza slowly, as a game drive in its own right, and you’ll likely complete the Big Five. Lower Sabie and Skukuza work best together, a few nights across both, with that celebrated stretch of river road linking them.
