Constantia is Cape Town’s green retreat, a valley of oaks, gardens and vineyards folded into the mountain’s eastern slopes about twenty minutes south of the city. It’s the country side of the Mother City: quiet, residential and leafy, and the place to stay if you’d rather wake up among vines than above traffic.
It’s also South Africa’s oldest wine region. The estates of Groot Constantia, Klein Constantia and Buitenverwachting are minutes apart, made for a tasting and a long lunch, and the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens are just up the road. With a car, you’re well placed for both the city and the Cape Peninsula, with Kirstenbosch, the cableway and the penguins at Boulders all within easy reach.
