The Umhlanga lighthouse and promenade on the beach north of Durban
Where to stay · Durban

Umhlanga

Durban's smart beach suburb, 20 minutes north of the city and minutes from the airport. The best hotels and the safest beachfront, with a lighthouse, a promenade and Africa's biggest mall on hand.

Umhlanga Rocks is where Durban goes upmarket. Twenty minutes north of the city, it’s a relaxed beach town of high-rises and villas built around a swimmable beach, a wooden promenade and the candy-striped lighthouse that everyone photographs. It’s calmer and noticeably safer than the central beachfront, which is why most visitors who want comfort base themselves here.

It’s also the practical choice. King Shaka airport is fifteen minutes up the coast, the Gateway mall and a strong restaurant scene are minutes away, and the best hotels in the Durban area sit along this stretch of sand. You give up a little of the city’s raw energy and pay a bit more, but you gain ease.

The hotels below are in Umhlanga and along Umhlanga Ridge. Prices are indicative, per night for two, and the booking links go straight to Booking.com.

The neighbourhood

Why stay here

The best of the beach

Umhlanga is the polished, safe end of the Durban coast: a swimmable beach, a wooden promenade and the red-and-white lighthouse, with the bustle of the central beachfront left behind.

Closest to the airport

King Shaka International is about 15 minutes north, which makes Umhlanga the easy first or last night of a Durban or Zululand trip.

Where the good hotels are

This is where Durban keeps its best stays, from the landmark Oyster Box to reliable Protea, Hilton Garden Inn and Holiday Inn Express hotels.

Eat, shop and relax

The Gateway mall, one of Africa's biggest, plus a deep restaurant scene around the promenade, make it a comfortable, low-effort base, especially for families.

Hotels

The kind of hotels

Umhlanga is the upmarket, reliable end of the Durban hotel scene. At the top sits The Oyster Box, the grand colonial hotel by the lighthouse; below it are dependable mid-range chains and aparthotels (Protea, Hilton Garden Inn, Holiday Inn Express, aha Gateway). You pay more than on the central Golden Mile, but for better quality and a safer, calmer setting.
