Graskop is the practical heart of the Panorama Route, a small town perched on the edge of the escarpment that most people use as their base. It’s an easy, walkable place of guesthouses, craft shops and the pancake houses it’s known for, and almost everything on the route is within half an hour, starting with God’s Window ten minutes up the road.
The waterfalls are the draw close to town. Just north, Lisbon Falls drops around 94 metres into a wooded gorge, the highest in Mpumalanga, and Berlin Falls makes a graceful single plunge a few minutes on, both with viewing platforms a short walk from the car park. Toward Sabie, the twin Mac Mac Falls add a third for anyone collecting waterfalls, and after the summer rains they all run hard.
In the middle of Graskop itself, the Gorge Lift carries you by glass elevator down into a forested gorge, where boardwalks and suspension bridges wind through the canopy, with a Big Swing and zip line for those who want a jolt. Then there are the pancakes, rolled around savoury or sweet fillings, which are as much a part of a Graskop visit as the falls. Stay a night here and the whole route, viewpoints, waterfalls and the gold-rush village, sits within easy reach.
